Smart Map of Jewish History
The digital story of the Jewish history of a European region
An |Interreg Slovakia-Austria programme|-Project. The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

From Bratislava to the Wachau, around Eisenstadt and Lake Neusiedl, from Vienna and the Wienerwald to St. Pölten and the Traisental valley, a landscape unfolds that is interwoven by a long, shared history. One strand in this diverse historical tapestry is Jewish history. Shaped by cycles of settlement, prosperity and expulsion, it continues to the present and is inscribed in the landscape, both visibly and invisibly – for example in the form of (former) synagogues, cemeteries, residential buildings and stories.
The region thus harbours a wealth of personal, domestic and business histories, as well as accounts of forced and voluntary migration. These include stories of economic, cultural and religious history, as well as accounts of Jewish-non-Jewish interactions. These stories need to be told, yet all too often they remain accessible only to experts. Since 2025, the project partners are developing a digital tool for these “stories”, providing access to digitised materials, innovative e-tools and 3D visualisations to make the stories and history – in some places for the first time – “legible” and narratable.

The target audiences for the “Smart Map” are as diverse as the stories it tells. It is designed to provide locals, interested tourists, schoolchildren and students, academics and artists with an accessible introduction to the Jewish history of the area. The entries on the “Smart Map” will also provide the descendants of the people they concern with new insights into their family history and help preserve the memory of their ancestors in the region.
