|„Mauer des Schweigens“. Eine Anstalt im kollektiven Gedächtnis |

Around 2800 patients were murdered, put to death or deported to Hartheim and Gugging for extermination in the Mauer-Öhling "sanatorium and nursing home" - today the Mauer Regional Hospital - during the Nazi era. In the documentary film "Wall of Silence", students of the ALW Amstetten interviewed relatives of victims and perpetrators of the Nazi murders as well as people who talked about how they dealt with the events after 1945. The film was produced by the nine pupils on their own initiative as part of the Sparkling Science project "'Closed' Institution? The 'sanatorium and nursing home' Mauer-Öhling in the Nazi era and in collective memory" of the Institute for Jewish History in Austria (St. Pölten) and the ALW Amstetten, in cooperation with the Amstetten municipal archive and the Lower Austrian provincial archive. In the two-year research process, the pupils also dealt with the memory of the victims on site. This filmic testimony is intended to contribute to gradual awareness and to serve the memory of the victims in Mauer-Öhling. The film was made with the support of the Institute for Jewish History in Austria, the Directorate of the ALW Amstetten and the Municipality of Amstetten. The project brochure "'Closed' Institution? The 'Heil- und Pflegeanstalt' Mauer-Öhling in the Nazi era and in collective memory" (PDF) can be found |here|.
