Smart Map of Jewish History
The digital story of the Jewish history of a European region
A project within the framework of |Interreg Slowakei-Österrreich|. The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

From Bratislava to the Wachau region, around Eisenstadt and Lake Neusiedl, from Vienna and the Vienna Woods to St. Pölten and the Traisen valley, this area has a long, shared history One strand in this diverse historical network is Jewish history. Marked by a succession of settlement, prosperity and expulsion, it is still evident in the present day, inscribed both visibly and invisibly – for example due to (former) synagogues, cemeteries, residential buildings and stories.
The region is thus home to a wealth of life stories, family and company histories, as well as stories of forced and voluntary migration. These stories of economic, cultural and religious history, as well as Jewish non-Jewish contact zones want to be told, but all too often they are only accessible to experts. Since 2025 the project ‘Smart Map of Jewish History’ has been developing a digital tool for these stories, providing access to digitised material, innovative e-tools and 3D visualisations to make the stories and history – in some places for the first time –narratable.

The target groups of the Smart Map are as diverse as the stories it tells. Its aim is to provide local people, interested tourists, schoolchildren, students, academics and artists with easy access to the area's Jewish history. The entries on the Smart Map will provide descendants with new approaches to their family history, while preserving the memory of their ancestors in the region.
