Welcome!

The Institute for Jewish History in Austria was founded in 1988 and is housed in the former synagogue of St. Pölten 60 kilometers west of Vienna. Its task is to carry out comprehensive research into the history and culture of the Jews in Austria, from the Middle Ages up to the present day.
It is our aim to counteract anti- and philo-Semitic prejudices and incorrect information through academic research, publications, lectures and activities in the area of adult education and school projects. The location of the Institute in the former synagogue in St. Poelten gave a new and meaningful use to this abandoned building.

With the Long Night of Museums on 1.10.2022, the Former Synagogue St. Pölten closed its doors. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2024.

Due to the renovation, our institute has moved to replacement premises at Linzer Straße 16/7. The office will be occupied only irregularly from 3 July - 1 September 2023. Please contact us via |mail: to office@injoest.ac.at|.

Even when the synagogue is closed, we will still be present with various activities. Please have a look at our calendar of events under |Aktuelles|.
